Motilal Nehru

Born on May 6,1861-February 6,1931

Motilal Nehru, father of Jawaharlal Nehru, was born on May 6, 1861 at Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Motilal Nehru's early education was taken care of by his brother Nandlal. He passed the matriculation examination from Kanpur and then joined the Muir Central College, Allahabad.In 1883, he ranked first in the lawyers examination and started practicing law at Kanpur.

After joining the Indian National Congress, he took the side of moderates on the issue of partition of Bengal. In 1907, he presided over a provincial conference of the moderate politicians at Allahabad. In 1909, he was elected as a member of the U.P. Council and in 1910, he became the President of the U.P. Congress.

In 1921, Nehru was arrested for his involvement in the Non-Cooperation Movement. Then Nehru and C.R. Das founded the Swarajya Party in 1923. Later, he also participated in Salt Satyagraha. He passed away on February 6,1931.
